Preventative Dental Care

At Bronitsky Family Dentistry, we like to educate our patients about the importance of their oral health, not just to their teeth and gums, but to their long-term health as well. In recent years, a growing amount of research has found compelling links between our oral health and a range of chronic health conditions. Studies have found that individuals who suffer from dental decay, disease, and tooth loss have a significantly higher risk for developing a range of health issues that include everything from heart disease and stroke to diabetes and dementia.

While researchers continue to search for what connects our oral health to our overall health, one thing has become perfectly clear - we can no longer afford to ignore the health of our teeth and gums. Fortunately, you can significantly lower your risk for tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth loss by following these three simple steps:

Step 1.) Brush twice a day. Brushing works to remove plaque and food particles that linger in the mouth after eating from the surface of our teeth and along the gum line. When allowed to buildup on the surface of our teeth, plaque transforms into tartar, a yellowish substance that discolors our teeth and causes decay and gum inflammation. By brushing twice a day for at least two minutes each time, you can successfully prevent plaque buildup and lower your risk for tooth decay and gum disease.

Step 2.) Floss daily. Flossing helps to remove plaque and food particles for areas of our mouths a toothbrush cannot reach - between our teeth and below the gum line. While much has been made recently about whether flossing actually helps to protect our oral health, Dr. Bronitsky and the American Dental Association both continue to recommend patients practice this important habit. If you remain unconvinced of the benefits of flossing, consider that the most common place for cavities to form in the mouth is actually between our teeth.

Step 3.) Schedule regular exams and cleanings. Regular dental exams provide Dr. Bronitsky the opportunity to spot the signs of dental decay and disease early on while still easy to treat. Frequent dental cleanings offer a chance for our gentle dental hygienists to remove plaque deposits from the surface of your teeth and along the gum line before they can cause decay and gum inflammation. Dr. Bronitsky recommends that patients schedule a dental exam and cleaning once every six months. However, depending on the current state of your oral health, more frequent visits may be necessary.

Digital X-rays

Protecting the oral health of our patients requires having access to the most complete information possible. At Bronitsky Family Dentistry, we take advantage of advanced digital x-ray technology to gain a comprehensive understanding of the current state of our patients' oral health. Not only do digital x-rays help to improve the accuracy of Dr. Bronitsky's diagnoses, and they also help to reduce radiation exposure to our patients. Digital x-rays are just another example of how the comfort and care of our patients always come first.

Dental Sealants

For younger patients who don't possess the manual dexterity or attention to detail necessary to properly clean their teeth, dental sealants offer an affordable and convenient way for parents to help protect their child's teeth from decay. A hard plastic resin, dental sealants effectively "seal" areas of a child's teeth, such as the back molars, that are at high risk of decay. During just on 10-minute session, Dr. Bronitsky can gently apply the resin directly to the surface of a patient's teeth, completely locking the enamel away from the effects of plaque and tooth decay.
