Dental Veneers in Aloha, OR
Are you ashamed to show off your smile? Are you embarrassed by your teeth because they are stained, chipped or because you have gaps between them? Dr. Erica Bronitsky and her team at Bronitsky Family Dentistry can help, with veneers and laminates!
What are veneers and laminates?
Veneers and laminates are shells that fit over teeth to improve their appearance or help to repair tooth damage. Although they are very thin, they are durable. They can be made to look like your natural teeth, so no one even notices you have them. They just notice what a great smile you have! Veneers are usually made of a tough porcelain material although sometimes they are made of a natural composite material.
What are dental veneers used for?
Veneers can help with many problems. They can be used to cover teeth that are severely stained and discolored when stains won’t come off with teeth whitening procedures. They can help to improve the appearance of teeth that are excessively worn down, are short and stubby, are irregularly shaped or malformed, or if they are crooked or have gaps between them.
What is the procedure for getting veneers?
Before placing veneers, Dr. Bronitsky will give your teeth a thorough exam, to make sure that veneers are the right restoration for you. This will include an X-ray. She will want to make sure that you have good oral health and only minor problems with your teeth. You shouldn’t have teeth with extensive tooth decay, and you need to have an adequate amount of tooth enamel. You should have healthy teeth and gums, and a stable bite. Because veneers can be damaged if too much stress is put on them, you should not have a habit of clenching or grinding your teeth.
If Dr. Bronitsky decides that veneers can help you, it may take a few visits to the Aloha dentist to get your veneers placed. She will begin by giving you a local anesthetic, and then she will trim some enamel off of the tooth. She will make a model of the tooth, which will be sent to a lab where they will make the veneer.
You’ll come back to Dr. Bronitsky’s office when the veneer is ready. She will place it on your tooth and make sure it looks and fits right. Often, to get it just right, the dentist has to remove the veneer, trim it and place it again.
When Dr. Bronitsky is sure that the veneer is a perfect fit, she will clean and polish your tooth and etch it, which is a process that roughens the tooth to prepare it to bond with the veneer. She will use a special cement to attach the veneer and use a special light to make the cement harden quickly. She will make any final adjustments and remove any excess cement. Then, you’ll walk out of the office with a great looking smile!
Dr. Bronitsky may ask you to come back in a few weeks so she can check the veneer.
What are the advantages of veneers?
Besides being very tough and natural looking, veneers and laminates have other advantages as well.
- Patients who have veneers get used to them very quickly. In no time, they don’t even know they have them on because they feel so natural.
- Compared to other cosmetic dentistry procedures, veneers are much less invasive and take much less time. Other restorations may require substantial reshaping of the tooth, whereas veneers do not.
- Veneers are less expensive than other cosmetic dentistry procedures
- Gum tissue tolerates porcelain veneers very well
Taking care of your veneers
Although veneers are tough, they are not as strong as natural teeth. You do have to do a few things to make sure you take care of them.
You should avoid hard foods, and bad habits such as chewing on ice or pens, as this can damage veneers. And, although porcelain is stain-resistant, you should try to stay away from foods and beverages that can stain your teeth. Over time, foods and drinks, such as tomato sauce, blueberries, tea, red wine, and coffee can make veneers look dull and can stain the tooth under the veneer as well as staining your other teeth.
Other than these things to keep in mind, veneers are very easy to maintain. You should take care of them as you would your natural teeth. Floss once a day, brush twice a day, and visit Dr. Bronitsky twice a year for your cleaning and exam.
